It’s summer, children are ready to spend more time outdoors and, if they are lucky, in their very own Backyard Oasis. Here are 5 easy to remember tips that will help your keep your child safe from the sun’s damaging UV rays.
-
Apply Sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors, even on a cloudy day. Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA and UVB (broad spectrum). Make sure you protect ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet.
-
Wear Sunglasses don’t just make you look cooler, they protect your child’s eyes from harmful UV rays, which can lead to cataracts later in life. Look for sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.
-
Wear a Hat can protect the face, ears, scalp and neck. Most children enjoy a baseball cap; but those aren’t as effective at protecting the ears and neck so be sure to cover those areas with sunscreen.
-
Seek Shade during the midday, which is when UV rays are strongest and most harmful. Plan snack time, lunch or break during these times which can be enjoyed under an umbrella or shady tree.
-
Sun-Protective Clothing and swimsuits with built in SPF can now be purchased at most retail stores. Clothes made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection.
